I have been reading a lot of how individuals want to stay below the GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Ratings) so they can avoid the CDL.
Ok, you are hauling without a CDL what are you going to do when:
You realize that you've maxed out your hauling/earning potential with that under 26k truck/trailer set up & need to get a bigger tractor/trailer - what are you going to do then???
You've built up a client base, maybe, so you're going to tell them: no I can't do it because I have to go to school and get my CDL??? You can't collect unemployment when you are self employed - you don't work, you don't eat.
What about Commercial Truck Insurance, I haven't worked with one broker that doesn't require you to have commercial truck insurance & definitely not the $750K liability that the feds have set as a minimum - the brokers I have worked with want you to have $1,000,000 million liability at a minimum with nothing more than a $1000 deductible (some even want you to have general liability) along with cargo insurance ($50k per car your trailer can haul, so if you are a 3 car hauler, you will need $150k of cargo insurance, 4 cars $200k in cargo insurance and so on) and if you think they will take your word for it - think again. They want "Certificates of Insurance" issued to their companies by your commercial truck insurance - some want to be "additionally insured", some don't even trust that, they call your insurance company directly and request it.
Do it right from the start.
