- Minimum Florida Auto Insurance Requirements
Driving is not a right, but a privilege. Each state grants you the privilege of driving in return for obeying traffic laws. In Florida, one of the requirements of owning a registered vehicle is that you buy insurance. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the state requires two types of insurance: personal injury protection and property damage liability. This insurance must be carried as long as the vehicle has a current registration, regardless of how often the vehicle is used.
Florida vehicle owners are required to carry $10,000 in personal injury protection, commonly called PIP or no-fault insurance. PIP protects the registered owner and the owner's family if anyone is hurt in an accident, regardless of who was at fault. PIP also covers the owner's child while the child is riding in a school bus, and his family while riding in a vehicle it doesn't own. If a car hits a member of the owner's family while riding a bike or walking, the injuries would be covered.
Florida also requires $10,000 of property damage liability. This insurance will pay for damages to another person's property, such as another vehicle or a structure, that occurred in a vehicle accident caused by the vehicle owner or anyone in his family.
If the owner of a car is caught driving without PIP or property damage liability, the state can suspend the owner's license for up to three years or until you produce proof of insurance. After you buy insurance, it will cost an extra $150 to get your license reinstated. The reinstatement fee goes up to $500 for repeat offenders.
