Arkansas Car Insurance Rates by ZIP Code and City

Arkansas car insurance requirements are right in line with many other states: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage. A family with a home or substantial savings might want to buy more coverage.

While this is not a no-fault state, Arkansas auto insurance companies do offer personal injury protection (PIP). PIP here comes in three parts, which are:

  1. Medical payments
  2. Lost wages
  3. Death benefits

You can decide to purchase any one part or all three together; however, if you determine that you dont want any PIP coverage you must reject it in writing. If you dont have health insurance, you might want to consider this option.

Discounts: Arkansas law helps senior drivers save by requiring car insurance companies to give a discount to drivers over 55 who have completed an accident prevention course approved by the states Office of Motor Vehicles.

Reasons for cancellation: After a policy has been in effect for over 60 days in Arkansas, an insurer can cancel only due to:

  • Nonpayment of premium
  • Fraud/misrepresentation in applying for the policy
  • Homicide arising out of the use of a motor vehicle
  • Three separate convictions of speeding and/or reckless driving within the policy period or three months prior to the beginning of the policy period
  • Conviction of driving while intoxicated

Notice periods: An Arkansas car insurance carrier must give you a 20-day written notice if it intends to cancel, except for cases of nonpayment, which require only a 10-day written notice. If your policy is not renewed, your auto insurer must give you a 30-day written notice.

The bad news is that having car insurance in Spain is legally required so there is no getting out of it; however the good news is that there are a number of ways of reducing your premiums in Spain without breaking the law!

While the article below looks at 10 different ways to get cheap (or at least cheaper) insurance in Spain, we must point out that you shouldnt just choose your policy on the basis of price alone.

Make sure you consider whether the cheap quote you have found actually gives you the full coverage you require otherwise the policy and premium is a complete waste of money.

Whatever you do, dont be tempted to provide false information on your insurance application as when it comes to making a claim.

There is no point of having auto insurance if you cant make a claim when you need to the insurance company can invalidate your contract if you have lied or provided false information.

10 Tips To Save You Money

Why pay any more than you really need to?

A bit of time spent researching and a few phone calls and e-mails to brokers or directly to insurance companies can save you literally hundreds of Euros in just one year.

Below we share with you ten ways that you can reduce and save money on your car insurance in Spain.

Tip 1 Increase Your Excess

The best way to save money and cut your car insurance premium in Spain is to accept a higher excess (known in Spain as franquicia). The insurance company will always have a compulsory excess but you can add what is known as a voluntary excess in order to to reduce your premium (because you have taken on and accepted more of the risk of the policy).

Only do this once you have analysed your driving skills. If you believe the chances or odds of you having an accident in Spain is high then of course do not make your excess any higher. Also consider any named drivers on your policy and their driving skills!

For example if the excess is 250 then in an accident you would lose 250 of any claim you made. If you increase your excess (flexifranquicia) to 500 then of course you stand to lose that but then if you dont have an accident in that year your insurance premiums will be much less. So in this example you can expect to save about 60 every year on your car insurance.

Tip 2 Buying a Car With a Smaller Engine Size Will Result in Cheaper Premiums

Another good tip to save you money on your car insurance is to buy a cheap car which is not highly powered. In our experience of living in Spain and doing a lot of driving in all areas of Spain, we can advise that roads are often poor quality and full of holes.

Spanish drivers are often quite dangerous drivers a massive generalization we know, but true!

Spanish drivers when parking will often be able to squeeze into the tightest parking spaces with a few nudges on the front or rear of your parked car!

What we are basically saying is that having a nice (expensive) car in Spain is all very well but the odds of having to claim on your insurance is higher than other countries we have lived in such as the United Kingdom.

Buying a cheap run-around town car is a sensible option. Buy a make and model common in Spain so servicing and replacement parts are cheap and you will also find your car insurance cover in Spain is similarly low and cheap. Avoid cars with modifications and extras that would make them more of a target for car thieves.

Tip 3 Third-Party Car Insurance is the Cheapest Type

Get cheaper car insurance by opting for third-party car insurance in Spain.

This money saving tip comes with a common-sense warning if your car has a high value then fully comprehensive car insurance in Spain is a must.

But if you can live with the possible cost of replacing your current car maybe it is almost due for a change or it no longer has much value then go for third party insurance in Spain.

You will save a substantial sum on your annual premiums.

Tip 4 Cheaper Spanish Car Insurance By Increasing Security

If you can increase the security of your vehicle then you should be able to save money on your quotes. Insurers appreciate that you have made additional efforts to reduce the likelihood of your car being stolen which means less claims, which is good for them.

If you can park in a more secure area such as a garage or driveway as opposed to on-the-road-parking this should reduce or lower your payments.

Fit an alarm or immobilizer to your car but first find out with your insurance broker or company that whatever model of security system you fit to your car is approved and will actually result in lower premiums otherwise you may be spending money for nothing.

Tip 5 Accept Limited Mileage to Lower your Premiums in Spain

This is a bit of an insider secret in the car insurance business but if you dont tend to clock up much mileage then you can sometimes get a reduction in your premiums by getting an agreed mileage restriction inserted into your policy.

Tip 6 Shop Around and Compare Car Insurance

Shop around and reduce your premiums. With Internet insurance sites such as ours you can easily find many different providers for car insurance.

Many Internet-only car insurance companies such as Linea Directa will have the cheapest premiums because they have smaller overheads compared to the big companies with large offices and staffs. Try also Liberty Seguros Spain, Mapfre Spain or Caser Insurance.

We also recommend contacting a number of brokers such as Knight Insurance Spain or Abbeygate Insurance Spain.

Use an insurance price comparison website that compares many deals on the market and instantly shows you the cheapest deals on offer. This will save you both time and money.

Another related tip is to tell a company what you have already been quoted and ask if they can beat it. Often they will.

This is because the market is extremely competitive and they want your business as they are banking on you being less proactive when it comes to renewing and so getting a new customer can be very lucrative indeed.

Tip 7 Drive Safely and Carefully for Cheaper Quotes

Driving carefully and safely in Spain will in the end result in lower premiums and cheaper car insurance. Our driving in Spain page has all the rules and regulations that must be obeyed.

Any convictions or points you get on your driving license for things such as dangerous driving, drink-driving, speeding, breaking the road laws etc all increase your insurance premiums as you are then seen as higher risk.

Driving in Spain (image hosted by getautoinsurance.net)Insurance companies love low risk drivers who have a clean driving license and exemplary driving record because they make little or no claims and therefore the insurance companies get to keep all of the premiums you have paid.

That may not sound fair but car insurance is compulsory so like it or not you may as well pay as little as you possibly have to.

Also, your insurer will reward you with cheaper insurance when the time comes to renew your insurance as they give you discounts the more years you have on your no-claims bonus discount.

Insurance companies prefer older drivers as they statistically do have fewer accidents, so if you are aged over 50 then make sure you find a quote that takes this into account.

There are also specialist insurance companies that only offer policies to older drivers and these companies are often very competitive on price.

Tip 8 Get All Your Spanish Policies With One Insurer

Try get your insurance policies in Spain under one roof. Assuming you will also need other types of insurance in Spain then it makes sense to take out policies with the same insurer.

For instance you may have more than one car or you may also need house and home insurance for your property. Perhaps you have Spanish life insurance, a funeral plan or cover for your pet?

Your insurer should be keen to get all of your possible business so they should offer further discounts to keep your custom.

Tip 9 Pay Your Spanish Car Insurance Annually

Pay your car insurance yearly in one single payment.

Paying annually instead of opting to pay by monthly installments makes sense because it works out less.

When you pay monthly premiums an amount of interest is typically added to cover the extra administration and the fact the money is not yet in the bank. These rates of interest charged are often quite high and often more than a banks loan rates.

Tip 10 Less Named Drivers Saves You Money

Reduce your named drivers or other drivers on your car insurance policy.

If you are just going to be the only driver and in most cases this is likely, then tell your broker or your insurance company because this could and should result in cheaper car insurance as most policies in Spain allow other people over 25 to also drive your car (with third-party liability usually).

Do also be aware of the opposite case where it is good to name a driver.

For example if you have young children who are learning to drive, by naming these younger drivers on your policy, they start to build their own no-claims discount/bonus up.

Premiums may well be higher initially but in the long run it saves them by building up a clean driving record.

Spanish Companies Providing Motor Insurance

Companies that provide car insurance in Spain include: Linea Directa (the Spanish equivalent of Direct Line Insurance in the UK) as well as Liberty Seguros, Allianz and Mapfre.

Price comparison websites will take your specifications and instantly search online and compare prices for the cheapest car insurance on the market. Always shop around as car insurance is unfortunately expensive.

If you are not Spanish you may be unprepared for the seemingly anything goes attitude that most drivers in Spain seem to adopt!

You also may not be familiar with driving in Spain or the local road customs such as when to give way etc. so this immediately increases the chances or odds of you being involved in an accident. We suggest you at least read these basic tips for driving in Spain.

So because the likelihood of having an accident in Spain is quite high so it is vital to have proper car insurance. We are not just dealing with damage to your vehicle or the other vehicle involved considerable medical claims could result for you or for the other party.

This is known as third-party liability and is the most important thing to cover when taking out insurance in Spain. Finding yourself uninsured or under-insured could be a real financial disaster for the rest of your life.

There are many companies providing auto services and policies in English to cater for the expatriate market in Spain so you understand what your insurance policy covers and what your liabilities are.

Do take into consideration your language skills. If you are not fluent in Spanish then it is important to take out car insurance with policy documents issued in English. Otherwise you wont fully understand what you are covered for.

Dont take the agent or brokers verbal explanation as when it comes to claiming on your insurance you will be the one footing the bill if you find you are not properly covered. So check the small print and ask questions until you are 100% sure the policy if what you want.

Car insurance is very similar in Spain to that of the United Kingdom there is a choice of fully comprehensive policies or third-party fire and theft policies.

Websites To Compare Car Insurance

Unlike the United Kingdom Spain does not have the variety of sites which will help you to compare car insurance between the various providers. In the UK websites such as Go Compare, Compare the Market, Confused.com and Money Supermarket are household names that Spain does not have as yet.

There is now a new price comparison website called Acierto.com which can compare prices and quotes from many different Spanish insurance companies as listed below:

  1. Linea Directa
  2. Genesis Insurance
  3. Zurich Insurance
  4. Balumba
  5. Click Insurance
  6. Direct Insurance
  7. Fenix Directo
  8. Regal Insurance
  9. AXA Insurance Spain
  10. Caser Seguros
  11. Verti
  12. Liberty Seguros
  13. Mutua Madrid
  14. Pelayo Insurance
  15. Reale Insurance
  16. Bilbao Seguros
  17. Vitalico
  18. FIATC

You will then be able to make an informed decision about which coverage and policy to choose because price is just one factor.

Knowing the benefits of each policy and the after-sales service should you have an accident in Spain is equally as important as finding the cheapest quote.

Fully Comprehensive Car Insurance

Fully comprehensive insurance is called todo riesgo which translates as all risks. This can also be referred to as full-coverage insurance.

This covers your vehicle and any other cars involved in an accident as well as covering you and the third-party in the event of personal injury and for medical expenses.

But do check the limits and amounts to ensure you are happy with the level of liability. Some insurance companies will not offer fully comprehensive if your car is more than three years old.

Fully comprehensive insurance will usually also come included with asistencia en viajes (breakdown cover and roadside assistance) and legal expenses (defensa penal).

Third Party Car Insurance

This is the most basic type of car insurance in Spain and it is this type that is the compulsory, minimum as required under Spanish law. In your documentation you will see this referred to as either responsabilidad civil obligatoria or seguro obligatorio.

Be aware of what cover this third-party insurance covers you for which is not your own vehicle but purely any damage to another vehicle or persons that you may be involved in an accident with. This is usually limited to a certain amount and this day and age you may wish to pay a little bit extra, about 50 to obtain ilimitada which is unlimited third-party coverage.

Third Party Fire and Theft

You can opt for just third-party insurance but it is better to pay the extra for third party fire and theft. This is because there really isnt much difference between the two and also because there is a lot of car crime each year in Spain.

If your documentation says responsabilidad civil obligatoria, incendio y robo then you have third-party fire and theft insurance.

Your contents inside the car will not normally be included but often legal expenses will be.

With all the types of car insurance as in the UK there are discounts for no-claims and discounts for named drivers as well as excesses/waivers.

One difference between Spain and the United Kingdom is that your policy will almost certainly automatically include annual Europe-wide roadside assistance and breakdown cover.

Some policies also cover you for a hire car if your car is off the road but some companies offer it as an optional extra so do check your policy details.

How Much Does Car Insurance in Spain Cost?

We are frequently asked questions concerning the costs of car insurance in Spain:

  • How much does car insurance cost in Spain?
  • Is car insurance in Spain cheaper than the UK?
  • Do you have a list of cheap Spanish motor insurance companies?

In general the cost of insuring your car in Spain is slightly less (but not by much) than that of the UK in our experience.

Here is a real example of car insurance premiums in Spain: Citroen Xara Picasso, four years old, value approximately 10,000. Annual premiums are 568 Euros for fully comprehensive cover.

What Happens if I Dont Take Out Insurance Cover?

Car insurance is compulsory in Spain.

It is obligatory of course to insure your car in Spain (seguro obligatorio). If you are not insured and many people are not, you could face a fine of 3,000 or be sent to prison in extreme cases.

Even if you are insured and you are stopped by the many different types of police in Spain, you can be fined 60 if you are not carrying your documentation. Make sure you carry in your car your receipt from your insurer or broker that proves you have paid for car insurance.

Can I Insure My UK Registered Car in Spain?

We know many of you want to know if you can insure your UK car and drive it to Spain. Then having driven your car to Spain you then panic and want to know if it is legal and whether your car insurance is valid or not.

There is much debate on this subject and so many people give differing answers. The easy answer is that yes you can obtain insurance with many companies and brokers who are actively advertising to insure UK registered cars but the question most people have is what happens when/if I need to make a claim?

Many people will tell you that it is not possible to insure a UK registered car in Spain. They say the policy in invalid under Spanish law and so it would follow that your car is not legally insured in Spain.

We have heard conflicting reports some people have claimed the insurance companies paid out in the event of a claim, others have told of the insurance companies using the small-print to invalidate the insurance contact/policy.

Some people once their UK MOT has run out, go and get a Spanish ITV (this is basically an MOT in Spain).

The Spanish ITV test is a certificate of road-worthiness for a Spanish plated vehicle. It proves the car is driveable and safe and ensures the insurance company cannot claim the car was at fault in the event of an accident.

But this doesnt mean that it makes your UK registered car in Spain legal to drive on Spanish roads. Simply if you have been in Spain for more than six months your car is technically illegal on the Spanish roads and you are at risk with your insurance.

If you are in any doubt ask your insurance company to provide you in writing with a letter stating that they understand that you are a permanent resident in Spain and that your car is UK registered and plated with no valid MOT or road tax in Spain but that you have obtained a Spanish ITV and that they are happy to provide you with insurance under these circumstances.

The easiest option is to eliminate all doubt and possibility that your insurance in Spain is invalid by re-registering your UK plated and registered vehicle, be it car, motorbike, van, caravan or motor-home by registering it as a Spanish vehicle in other words importing it into Spain legally.

Green Card Spain Driving Outside of Spain

On the flip side you can also drive your Spanish registered vehicle in the United Kingdom as most Spanish car insurance policies also include around 30 days, sometimes 60 days, foreign travel cover whereby you can take your car outside of Spain and still be insured.

You will need to check with your individual insurance company because sometimes the coverage is limited to third party only. Check your documents and youll usually find a green card with the foreign insurance details.

This green card or International Certificate of Motor Insurance, is no longer a legal requirement within the European Union but it is useful to prove that you have the minimum insurance cover required to drive on European roads.

Road Tax in Spain IVTM

If you own a vehicle registered in Spain be it a car or other type of motor vehicle used on the roads, then you are liable to pay an annual road tax. In Spain this is called Impuesto Sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica (IVTM). Read more about road tax in Spain.

No Claims Bonus in Spain

The good news is that most Spanish insurance companies and providers will recognise your no-claims bonus (NCB) even if you have built this up in another European country such as the United Kingdom (UK).

In common with other countries your car insurance in Spain gets cheaper the longer you go without making a claim on your insurance policy in Spanish this is called prima de no reclamacion.

Plus you can now pay a small additional premium in order to protect against the risk of losing your no-claims bonus (no claims discount).

Temporary Car Insurance Short-Term Car Insurance

This term may be unfamiliar to you but this type of insurance is becoming more popular. Temporary car insurance (aka short term car insurance) is a form of short term car insurance which enables you to insure a car for a very limited duration usually for just a few days at a time but it can be as long as a month.

Some of the reasons you might want to take out temporary insurance in Spain would be for friends and relatives who come to visit you for a holiday and to stay with you.

If they are not covered under the terms of your current car insurance then you can obtain temporary car insurance so that they can drive your car while you are at work.

Another reason is that you might just want to borrow somebodys car for a short trip or temporary period. Why go to all the hassle of taking out an annual policy only to cancel it later.

We all know how you dont get a full refund for the time left on your policy and in some cases you dont get anything back at all!

Short term car insurance is becoming increasingly popular for expat residents in Spain. This is due to the nature of people from the United Kingdom going back and forwards to Spain.

Many people have holiday homes in Spain and they might stay in Spain for short periods. In this instance short-term insurance may be a more economical alternative to taking out an annual car insurance policy.

In this way you can just take out insurance when you need it. These short term car insurance policies can be taken out for just one day or as long as a month.

It can also be referred to as temporary car insurance. There are many reasons and situations where sometimes you just want to drive a car for a week, perhaps you are borrowing somebodys car while yours is being fixed, there are all sorts of reasons and short-term insurance provides a solution.

Reader Simon wrote in to ask:

Do you do short term insurance, i.e 3 months for a 700cc quad bike?

Answer from our experts:

The law in Spain is that if you have a vehicle it must be insured at all times irrespective of whether it is being used or is parked up on or off the road. As such, no companies provide short term insurance. It is an enquiry we get quite a lot. If the vehicle is registered in another country the existing insurance for the vehicle in that country should be extended to cover use in Spain for the period required rather than arranging a separate policy over here.

Best Louisiana Car Insurance Cheapest LA Auto

Louisiana is the most expensive State in America for car insurance, but this is not as many people believe due to Louisiana car insurance companies trying to recover the billions they paid in claims due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. There is a far more complicated reason.

In Louisiana, only claims for road traffic accident compensation above $50,000 are heard by a jury, and there are a lot of Louisiana auto insurance claims settled at $49,000 in front of an elected judge catering to public opinion rather than being guided by the law. This, claims Louisiana car insurance companies, makes seeking a claim against an at-fault driver far more lucrative for the plaintiffs, and the insurance companies have to pick up the tab. A cost they pass on to vehicle drivers in higher car insurance rates.

As Louisiana has traditionally had a higher rate of bodily injury per capita than most States, and experiences 50 per cent more road traffic fatalities per capita than the national average, car drivers in Louisiana are also involved in more traffic-related lawsuits than most other States.

Louisiana Car Insurance Requirements

The high insurance rates exist despite very low limits on liability and no compulsion to take any form of personal injury protection or Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Protection. The minimum liability limits increased in January 2010 and now stand at:-

$15,000 for injury/death to one person

$30,000 for injury death to more than one person

$25,000 for damage to property

Louisiana Auto Insurance Laws

There are no alternative means of proving financial responsibility to car insurance in Louisiana and auto insurance companies in Louisiana have to provide information about your liability coverage to the Department of Public Safety and Corrections Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). This information not only advises the OMV what level of liability you have, but also when you amend or cancel your Louisiana car insurance an action which results in a flag being placed on your car registration.

If you are unable to provide proof of car insurance in Louisiana when asked to do so by a law enforcement officer, OMV employee or any other public authority, your car will be impounded and you only get three days in which to prove you were insured before having to go through the car registration process again. If you are stopped for a traffic violation such as driving under the influence, you could face a $1,000 fine, six months in jail and have your license suspended for up to a year after which time you will also need to carry proof of SR22 insurance for a further three years. If you thought regular auto insurance was expensive, wait until you see how much it would cost for SR22 car insurance in Louisiana.

Recommended Louisiana Car Insurance Coverage

With such low liability limits on car insurance in Louisiana, it is recommended that coverage is increased to at least $50,000/$100,000 on the basis that if you are responsible for an accident, you are likely to be facing an injury compensation settlement of $49,000 and your insurance company will only pay the first $15,000/$30,000 after which you are liable for the rest!

Furthermore, because of the high cost of auto insurance in Louisiana, it is estimated by the Insurance Research Council that one-in-eight of drivers on Louisiana´s roads are uninsured. This statistic might encourage you to consider Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Protection or opt for a fully comprehensive Louisiana car insurance policy to protect you from the theft of your vehicle and any future devastating extremes of weather.

Cheap Louisiana Car Insurance Quotes

While finding cheap Louisiana car insurance quotes in the most expensive State in America for auto insurance may be difficult, it is not impossible. By making safety and security improvements to your car, taking defensive driving courses and using public transport to commute to work, you can make significant savings on your Louisiana car insurance. Drivers who use their cars very little, and engage in safe driving practices should also consider Pay-as-you-Drive car insurance in Louisiana which, it is claimed, can save you up to 25 per cent on Louisiana auto insurance rates.

The best way in which to find cheap Louisiana car insurance rates is to shop around using the car insurance comparison tool at the top of the page. Simply enter your zip code and answer a few of the questions which appear on the page to receive a range of quotes from leading car insurance companies in Louisiana. Thereafter, ask them if you qualify for further discounts if you feel that you have a good car insurance rating.

Louisiana Car Insurance Ratings

Your car insurance rating is based on many factors which, combined together, indicate to Louisiana car insurance companies the level of risk they are taking by insuring you. These factors are based on historical evidence about where you live, how responsible you are (statistically) likely to be, the make, model and year of your car and how much use you are going to make of it. Your age, gender and marital status also influences your Louisiana auto insurance quote, as does your credit rating which the car insurance companies in Louisiana are entitled to see before offering you a car insurance policy.

The major factors affecting Louisiana car insurance ratings are:-

  • Where You Live The first piece of information auto insurance companies in Louisiana will ask you to provide is your zip code. Although the prospect of having your car stolen if you live outside of New Orleans (see below) is pretty remote, living in an urban area with a low volume of traffic is going to be more beneficial that living in an urban area.
  • Your Age and Gender Young drivers do not get as heavily penalized in Louisiana as in some other States because the percentage of road traffic accidents caused by the 20-24 age group is relatively low (just 10 per cent in 2008). However, as 86.21 per cent of serious road traffic accidents were caused by males, expect to pay more for your car insurance in Louisiana if you are a boy than if you are a girl.
  • Credit Rating Louisiana auto insurance companies like to see that you are responsible with your money. It implies (statistically) that you are also responsible on the roads and, if you pay your bills on time, you will get preferential car insurance rates in Louisiana. You may also get a discount if you pay one year´s car insurance in advance so a credit card in good standing can be of double benefit to you!
  • Driving History By maintaining a good driving history you will benefit from discounted car insurance rates in Louisiana. If you are found liable in a road traffic accident, your car insurance premiums will increase dramatically because of the reasons outlined at the top of the page. Safe driving and the avoidance of traffic violations is of paramount importance if you want to save money on car insurance in Louisiana.

Most Stolen Vehicles in Louisiana

As well as introducing safety and security features to your car, you should also be aware of what vehicles are targeted by car thieves in Louisiana. Each year the National Insurance Crime Bureau publishes a list of the most commonly stolen vehicles by State. This list for Louisiana in 2010 was as follows:-

  1. Ford F150 Pick-Up
  2. Dodge Ram
  3. Chevrolet Pick-Up
  4. Honda Accord
  5. Toyota Camry
  6. Chevrolet Impala
  7. Nissan Altima
  8. Ford Explorer
  9. Ford F250 Pick-Up
  10. Ford Taurus

Where You Car May Get Stolen in Louisiana

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) also publishes a list of the 360 metropolitan districts in America which experience the most car theft per capita. New Orleans heads the list for the State of Louisiana and is thirty-second nationally as the city in which your car is most likely to be stolen. Seven other districts made it into the NICB car theft table their national position is shown in brackets:-

  1. New Orleans (32)
  2. Baton Rouge (114)
  3. Monroe (117)
  4. Lafayette (118)
  5. Lake Charles (121)
  6. Shreveport (141)

Cheapest Car Insurance in Georgia - ValuePenguin

ValuePenguin conducted a survey of auto insurance rates in Georgia to give the Peach State's 6.5 million licensed drivers a sense of average rates by city. The study was based on the sample profile of a single 30 year old male driving a 2010 Toyota Camry (excellent driving record and homeownership) across thirty cities.

Based on sample data, the average cost of car insurance in Georgia was $1,090 for the year, but that rate can be quite different from city to city, and indeed, from insurer to insurer. The city of Atlanta ranked as the most expensive in the Peach State. On the other hand, Valdosta, GA, took the spot of the cheapest for auto insurance. Within the city of Athens, for example, auto insurance rates could differ by as much as 45% depending on what insurers consumers are comparing. For this reason, as a rule of thumb, we always advise that consumers shop around and compare quotes from at least three companies before selecting an insurer.

Cheapest Auto Insurance Companies in Georgia

In our comparisons of auto insurance companies in Georgia, we found that GEICO had the cheapest rates for 83% of the cities we looked at. On average, we found quotes for our sample male driver from GEICO to be about 14% lower than the average of the other insurers in our analysis. 15 minutes or more might actually save you (almost) 15% off on your car insurance in Georgia.

Out of thirty cities, only five cities had a different cheapest insurer: Atlanta, Milledgeville, Macon, Columbus, and Savannah. In these five cities, the company with the cheapest quotes was actually Allstate. This is especially relevant for drivers in Atlanta and Milledgeville, which ranked in the top three most expensive cities in the Peach State.

Average Cost of Car Insurance in Georgia by City

Because car insurance is highly dependent on where a driver lives, drives, and parks their car, we took a look at a selection of thirty cities in Georgia to give our readers an idea of what average rates they could see. We'll talk about some of our findings in the six largest cities and the cheapest cities, as well as show the data in a table.

Atlanta, GA

Georgias largest city, Atlanta is home to about 444,000 residents, and two famous destinations: the worlds largest aquarium, the World of Coca Cola. The Falcons, Hawks, Thrashers, and Braves sports team call this city home as well. Auto insurance rates in Atlanta are the most expensive in the state of Georgia - no surprise given the city's large population and its reputation for traffic.

Cheap car insurance in Atlanta isnt difficult to find, however. The average cost of car insurance here is $1,263 a year for a single 30-year old male Atlantan driver with an excellent driving record. This is about 16% higher than the overall average for car insurance in the state of Georgia. There are some savings to be had, however, at Allstate, which had the cheaper rates for the ATL. GEICO was not far behind with quotes that were just a few dollars more expensive each year.

Augusta, GA

Augusta has affordable car insurance too. Despite being the third largest city in Georgia with 193,000 people, its costs are middle of the road for the state. Annual premiums can cost on average $1,101 a 30 year old male in Augusta, which is just 1% higher than the state average. Additionally, costs in Augusta are about 13% cheaper than its larger sister, Atlanta, and 24% more expensive than the cheapest city. The cheapest auto insurance company in Augusta is GEICO. Known as the Garden City, Augusta was named after the Princess Augusta of Saxe Gota when it was established in 1735. Today, the city hosts golf pros at the Masters Tournament each year at the Augusta National Club.

Columbus, GA

With a bit of research, cheap car insurance in Columbus, GA can be had. It's the second largest city, but only the seventh most expensive in Georgia. Drivers here can pay about $1,157 to insure their cars a year this rate is 6% higher than the average city in Georgia. Compared to its neighbors Atlanta and Macon, Columbus is about 8% cheaper. Compared to Albany, some 80 miles away, Columbus's costs are 18% higher. Allstate had the cheaper auto insurance quotes in Columbus. Located in the heart of the Chattahoochee Valley in Muscogee County, Columbus is criscrossed with five major highways, including Interstate 185 and Route 80, which is great for commuters and transportation.

Savannah, GA

Drivers searching for low cost auto insurance in Savannah should know that the average cost for insuring a car in the city is $1,133 a year. These costs place Savannah as the 12th most expensive city in Georgia, but going with Allstate, the cheapest insurer in Savannah, can save you money. Compared to the state average, driving in Savannah costs 4% more, but better here than in Atlanta, where auto insurance costs are about 10% more. Savannah is the oldest city in the Peach State, and has been celebrated for its beautiful public squares, Victorian houses, and Spanish moss covered oak trees.

Athens, GA

For one of the largest five cities in Georgia, Athens has the second cheapest car insurance rates in the state. Car insurance here is 15% cheaper than the state average at $926 per year, but we found one of the widest variances in rates offered by insurers here. For example, the most expensive quote was 45% higher than the cheapest quote in Athens this underscores the need for consumers to shop and compare quotes from different insurers before purchasing a policy. Consider starting a quote with GEICO, which we found to be the cheapest company in Athens for car insurance. Athens is home to the University of Georgia and 115,000 residents.

Macon, GA

Macon has the fourth highest rates in the state with annual costs of $1,243 for single 30 year old males. Macons rates are 14% above the state average, but only $20 less than the rates drivers would have to pay if they lived in Atlanta. The cheapest auto insurance company in Macon was Allstate in our comparisons; Allstate's rates were about 10% less than other competitors underwriting in the city. The Cherry Blossom Capital of the World, Macon is also home to five colleges and universities.

Cities with the Cheapest Car Insurance: Valdosta, Athens, Clayton

On the other end of the spectrum are Valdosta, Athens, and Clayton - cities scattered across the counties of Lowndes, Clarke, and Rabun. Car insurance costs here are less than a grand a year, and in the case of Valdosta, less than $900 for twelve months of liability protection on the road.

Best Auto Insurance Companies

To determine which companies were the best, we looked at the financial strength ratings and the justified complaint index for ten companies. These two factors were chosen as measures of the company's ability to pay out claims (as measured by AM Best), and how few justified complaints they received relative to other competitors (as collected by the NAIC). We then indexed and calculated a rating for each company (the lower numbers, the better). Here are the companies ranked.

Based on these metrics, Southern Farm Bureau, State Farm, and GEICO are the best companies. As we've mentioned, GEICO and Allstate are two of our cheapest companies, so if price is a factor in your consideration, these two companies are great places for you to comparison shop.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Traditional vs. New Added-On

While uninsured and underinsured ("UM/UIM") coverage is optional in Georgia, drivers here have an option to expand their coverage. It's known as New / Added-on to At-Fault Liability.

If you want greater peace of mind and don't mind paying about 2% extra (that's about $21 more on top of your annual premium), then consider picking the new added-on version of UM/UIM.

What's the difference between traditional and the new add-on UM/UIM?

When you have Traditional or Reduced by At-Fault Liability UM/UIM, your insurance steps in to pay remaining damages up to your policy's limits. With the new Added-On to At-Fault Liability option, your protection is greater, since your coverage gets increased dollar for dollar by your limts.

Let's say for example that you carry $100k of UM/UIM, and you're rear-ended by a driver who is insured for $50k. Total damages equal $125,000. Under Traditional, or Reduced By At-Fault Liability, the other driver's insurance company would pay for the first $50k of damages, and your insurance pays the difference up to your $100k coverage, which is $50k. That leaves you with $25k that doesn't get reimbursed.

On the other hand, if you have the new added-on option, your total protection equals your liability limits plus the other driver's limit. In the example above, you get $50k from the other insurance company, and your own insurer pays the remaining $75k.

Costs in Largest Cities vs. Smallest Cities in Study

This graph shows how costs can differ between the larger and smaller cities in our Georgia sample. Generally speaking, the larger and denser the city, the higher the costs of auto insurance in that city. We didn't find such a clear-cut relationship in our sample data, however. For example, with a population size of 119,000, Athens is the fifth largest city in Georgia, and has one of the higher population densities in our sample, but has second cheapest rates in our study.

This graph illustrates how costs for auto insurance can differ based on different-sized cities in Georgia.

Cities are arranged in decreasing population from left to right.

How We Conducted the Study

We obtained sample quotes for a selection of thirty cities in Georgia, including the largest five urban cities by population. Our sample driver is a single, 30 year old male living and driving in Georgia. He's an employed homeowner with excellent credit and a clean driving record - no traffic violations or accidents for the past five years. He drives a 2010 Toyota Camry 4-door sedan about 10,000 miles a year mainly to commute to work.

The data in our study is based on a car insurance policy with the below parameters. These limits and deductibles are higher than the minimum you'll need to drive in Georgia (listed in the last column).

Coverage TypeLiability LimitsGeorgia Minimum
Bodily Injury$50,000 / $100,000$25,000 / $50,000
Property Damage$50,000$25,000
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) TypeReduced by At-Fault LiabilityOptional
UM/UIM Bodily Injury$50,000 / $100,000Optional
UM/UIM Property Damage$50,000Optional
Comprehensive Coverage (deductible)$500Optional
Collision Coverage (deductible)$500Optional

Sample auto insurance quotes automatically reflect homeownership, excellent credit, and a clean driving history. Additional discounts are incorporated into the policy quotes for payment in full and safety features on the Toyota Camry (anti-lock brakes, airbags, and automatic anti-theft measures).

These annual premiums are for informational purposes only. The quotes you'll get from insurers will be different based on your individual driving record, preferred liability limits, vehicle type, and other factors.

What to Look for When You Compare Car Insurance Companies

When you compare auto insurance companies after obtaining free quotes, be sure to take note of several items that will help you obtain a better auto insurance rate quote. When requesting a quote, remember that the largest, most well known auto insurance companies wont necessarily give you with the cheapest automobile insurance quote or the best customer care if you are ever in an automobile accident or need to make an auto insurance claim. While you review and compare, please remember that there might be less well known companies that can offer top notch service and cheaper rates on your vehicle.

When you compare low cost quotes for your automobile, there are several factors you should look at while reviewing you quote. If you are deciding to buy between a couple different quotes offering different coverage options or premiums, researching the company may help you make your decision on which policy may be best for your circumstances. Here are a few tips to help you compare quotes and make buying an auto insurance policy from specific companies a little easier.

1. Research the auto insurance company after getting a rate quote. We work with many trusted companies, but you may consider checking with the state to determine if there might be any notable compaints against the company that might make you choose not to do business with them. You can do this by contacting your states insurance department by phone or online.

2. Consider the company reputation and history while you compare each quote from the providers you talk to. Find out how long the company has been providing auto insurance rates in your state. Do they provide high quality customer care? Are their policies different than your existing coverage? Do they have any complaints with the Better Business Bureau?

3. Look at their process for filing auto insurance claims when you compare companies. Ask about the company process for filing a claim for an automobile accident and how long the process usually takes. If you are ever involved in a car accident, you'll want to make sure the company handles the claim in a timely manner.

4. Ask friends, family and co-workers when shopping for a cheaper policy. Sometimes, the best way to find a reputable car insurance company is to ask the people you trust. Explain that you are looking for auto insurance quotes and you need recommendations on different companies. See how long they have been with their company, if they have gotten cheap quotes from other companies and if they have ever had to file a claim and how long it took. You could also talk to a mechanic at a trusted auto repair shop about policy suggestions as they may have ideas on which of their clients have had good and bad experiences.

5. Go with your gut feeling. When you compare and get rate quotes, go with the company that makes you feel most comfortable. Follow your instincts while getting a quote comparison. Was the agent or company representative able to answer all your coverage and policy questions? Did the agent treat you with courteous and respect? Were they honest about what coverage you needed and did not need or did they just try to sell you additional coverages you felt that you could do without?

Finding the Right Car Insurance Quote

When you are shopping to buy car insurance online, be sure to remember that the cheapest quote doesnt necessarily mean you will get the best value on your automotible coverage. The Insurance Information Institute recommends getting at least three car insurance quotes from three separate auto insurers. When you have the rate quotes, look beyond the dollar amount to what the vehicle coverage actually covers. Be aware of the several other factors that could affect you if you are ever in an automobile accident or need to make a claim such as the type of coverage, the coverage amounts, deductibles, what is covered and more importantly, what is not covered in the 'policy exclusions' document.

When you compare quotes from multiple providers, consider what is covered in a policy and that you're getting an apples to apples comparison. You might be surprised to find out the coverages quoted may be different depending on how many drivers are on the policy, whether you have home or renters insurance and even your zip code. When it comes down to reviewing and deciding to buy the most affordabe coverage from the best company, be sure to compare multiple providers so that you can find out which company actually offers the cheapest car insurance with coverage that meets your expectations.

Boxing clever: Laura Keely's premium has been slashed thanks to opting for an insurer's blackbox policy

Boxing clever: Laura Keely's premium has been slashed thanks to opting for an insurer's blackbox policy

One in three consumers pays over the odds for car insurance, according to the RAC.

The major crime most drivers commit against their personal finances is failing to shop around for the best premium and simply accepting your insurer's renewal quote, which is likely to be much higher.

Younger drivers can also grab themselves potentially much cheaper car insurance by opting for one of the new blackbox policies, these put a spy in your car to monitor your driving and reward those who are careful and don't drive at dangerous times.

Laura Keely, right, opted to have a little black box put in under the dashboard of her Vauxhall Corsa by Insurethebox. In 2011,she paid £1,800 for a comprehensive policy. Twelve months on, her premiums have dropped to just £1,000 a 44per cent fall.

Whether you are male or female, old or young, follow our ten steps to lower premiums.

      1. Shop around for the best deals

Savings of hundreds of pounds can be found if you shop around when you renew your cover.

Be careful though. When shopping around for car insurance, it's important to make sure that you are comparing like-for-like cover. Some policies may seem cheaper, but you may find you don't have the same level of cover when you have to make a claim.

Use an online comparison service to do the hard work for you. Put in your details and check the prices that come up. You can alter the excess that you are willing to pay and the mileage you will drive and get new quotes. Also check the insurers that don't feature in comparison sites, the big two are Direct Line and Aviva.

QUICK LINK TO SAVE MONEY ON CAR INSURANCE

M&Scardholders looking for car insurance cover could clock up 1,000 pointsby taking out a new policy (renewals don't count). You also get European and legal coverage.

For the environmentally-conscious, The Green Car Insurance deal not only plants trees on your behalf, but throws 90 days free travel insurance and an 25 per cent discount on your car cover into the deal.

Churchill offers a 24-hour legal advice line, an uninsured drivers promise and a five year servicing deal. Experienced, safe drivers could also get an 80 per cent discount for cover of eight years or more.

Temp Car insurance could be a good option if you are after cover for a short period of time and Provisional Marmalade have a decent offering exclusively structured for young drivers.

      2. Don't put everyone on your policy

Ensure that only regular drivers are named on the policy. You can always add someone for a few days when they really need to drive the car.

      3. Protect that no-claims bonus

A long no-claims bonus is the single best way of cutting car insurance costs, so protect it. This may increase the premium by a few pounds, but this fades into insignificance against the potential loss of a 90% discount on a premium of several hundred pounds.

But the definition of a protected no-claims bonus can vary widely between insurers. Though accidents caused by another driver will normally have no impact on such a bonus, those caused by the insured could. The key is to always check the policy carefully.

      4. Take a higher excess

Increase your voluntary excess. Agreeing to pay more towards the cost of any accident repairs will bring down premiums. If you are not at fault in an accident, the excess can be recovered.Beware being tempted to allow it to rise too high, however, especially if you have a lower value car.

      5. Secure your car

Fitting an approved alarm, immobiliser or tracking device can attract a discount of around 5%. Many newer cars will come with these as standard, so make sure you check if you have them and then declare them.

FIVE STEPS THAT CAN CUT THE CAR INSURANCE BURDEN

      1. Compare pricesUse an online comparison service to do the hard work for you. Put in your details and check the prices that come up. You can alter the excessthat you are willing to pay and the mileage you will drive and get new quotes. Also check the insurers that don't feature in comparison sites, the big two are Direct Line and Aviva. This is Money's car insurance search is powered by MoneySupermarket and will search more than 130 insurers for you. Try it out here.

      2. Haggle! The car insurance market is notoriously competitive. Once you've been on This Is Money's comparison and found your cheapest price (below), get on the phone and start bargaining!

      3. Avoid paying monthly charges Directdebit installments generally come hand-in-hand with high interest rates. An alternative is to borrow the money on a 0 per cent purchase credit card and then clear it within a year. [Check the best 0% purchase credit cards here]

      4. Think outside the box An accelerated no-claims bonus, such as Admiral's Bonus Accelerator, could give you a year's no claims bonus after just 10 months.

      5. Named drivers and friends and family If you have previously been insured asan additional driver on another policy, see if you can transfer a no claims bonus to your own insurance coverage. Some insurers do this, including Direct Line. Try for a discount by insuring two or more vehicles between friends or family members with the same firm.

      6. Do less miles

The fewer miles the car covers, the greater the saving. For example, a reduction in annual mileage of 5,000 miles could save a typical 35-year-old female driver about £50 a year in premiums. A cut of 10,000 miles a year could save more than £100.

But you must be honest about your annual mileage, as inaccuracy will jeopardise any claim. Check your use cover - if you don't use your car to drive to work or for business - both things that increase your premium - you may be able to get a cheaper rate.

      7. Think carefully about adding young drivers

Adding a young, inexperienced driver to your policy can be a false economy, especially if you have a large or higher powered vehicle. The premium will still be affected by the youngest driver and he or she may not have a no-claims bonus. Insurers have also been cracking down on fronting, where parents insure cars in their name for children to cut costs, so make sure if you are the policyholder on a car driven by your children that you are actually its main driver, or that you declare otherwise.

      8. Watch out for insurance trap cars

      THE EU AND FEMALE INSURANCE

The EU has ruled that finance companies can no longer be able to use your gender when deciding what to charge you.

Thiswas triggered by a European Court of Justice ruling on a challenge by aBelgian consumer group. Its case was that the exemption for insurers contradicted the principle of gender equality.

Theban came into force on 21 December 2012, after fierce campaign for UK firms which argued that they were not discriminating between the sexes but instead were basing their prices on statistics.

Theirargument was that as women live longer they pay less for life insurance, and get cheaper car cover because they have fewer accidents. The move to so-called gender-neutral pricing will affect premiums for all types of insurance including car, life, private medical and incomecover.

If you decide to change your car, check with your insurer if the model will have a significant effect on the premium. Sporty cars can attract a high premium and often a slightly different model or smaller engine can make a big difference in your favour. It will also probably save you on petrol too!

      9. Remember what the garage is for

If your garage is full of junk, clear it out and use it for your car. Insurers like cars kept in garages overnight and this can dramatically cut your premium. Aside from the benefit of not having to scrape the ice off in winter, there is a higher risk of theft by keeping the car on the road, so keeping it in the garage will be reflected in your premium.

      10. Be a better driver and sign up to a blackbox

Blackbox policies, where the insurer instals a system in your car to monitor your driving, reward those who drive carefully. Officially called telematics, these check your speed, your handling and how cautiously you drive, and also whether you are on the road at perceived dangerous times - ie the early hours of the morning.

They can cut premiums substantially once you start proving you are a good driver. The biggest win is for those whose premiums are high, especially young drivers.

Get the Cheapest Car Insurance for Teens

Car insurance is an expensive component of car ownership. Throw in a teen driver and your rates could sky rocket. Keep your cool when purchasing insurance for your teen. Learn what discounts are available, what car to buy, and what coverage to choose to keep your rates as low as possible.

      Good Student Discount

Start with the discount specifically created for teens. Insurance companies have determined good students are better drivers. Most insurance companies offer a good student discount that can really boost your savings. Encourage good grades averaging above a 3.0 grade point average. Have your teens most recent report card ready to go when purchasing car insurance. If a 3.0 isnt possible at the time you add your teen driver, the discount can always be added on at a later date if the grade point average improves.

      Occasional Operator

Sharing a car with your teen is a great way to save some cash. Most carriers can then list your teen driver as a secondary or occasional driver. Make sure to mention it to your agent because it is possible for this discount to slip through unnoticed.

      Choosing the Right Vehicle

If sharing is still not in your teens vocabulary or busy schedules just dont allow for sharing, be smart about picking out a vehicle for your teen. Look for something reliable yet affordable. You dont want your teen stranded on the side of the road, but at the same time you dont want to take out a loan on their vehicle either. Depending on your price range, look for a vehicle ranging in age from 6 to 10 years old. Check for air bags and other safety features. Liability insurance on a car with air bags is cheaper verses one without because air bags reduce the potential of serious injury.

      PLPD Coverage

Selecting the right coverage for your teen driver could potentially save you hundreds of dollars. If you followed the rules above about choosing the right vehicle, you are in a good position to insure the vehicle with personal liability and property damage, PLPD, only. To get PLPD only you cannot have a loan on the vehicle, and youll want to be in the position where you can replace the car on your own if something were to happen to it. PLPD is the least amount of insurance you can purchase making it the cheapest. Physical damage is the most expensive coverage for a teen driver. Avoiding physical damage coverage such as comprehensive and collision can save you a lot on car insurance premiums.

      Resident Student Discount

A licensed teen away at school still needs to be insured. Even when your teen wont have access to a vehicle insurance is usually still required because they will come home from time to time. An even deeper discount is available through most insurance carriers for students away at school. If your teen is away at school make sure your insurance company knows about it.

Insure on Parents Policy or on a Separate Policy

Which is cheaper adding a teen onto their parents policy or on a separate policy? It is a tricky question to answer. Insurance companies vary so much its impossible to say which the best route to go is. Theoretically, adding a young driver to their parents policy would be the cheapest way to go. The teen driver would get all the parents big discounts such as multi-car and multi-policy.

Some insurance companies have to rate a teen on all the vehicles on the policy, not just the one being driven by the teen. This is the biggest reason it may be cheaper to put a teen on a separate car insurance policy. If a teen is automatically rated on all the vehicles and a couple of the vehicles have full coverage, you will be paying a higher rate. Having a teen on a separate policy ensures the insurance company is only charging for the use of one vehicle. Major discounts can sometimes extend to a teen on their own policy if they live in the same household as another policy holder with the same carrier.

Teen drivers can be very expensive to insure. Think ahead when it comes to insuring your teen. Start working harder on good grades, shop around for the best vehicle, and minimize your coverage. Find out from your insurance agent if an away at school discount is available and also check into having your teen on a separate policy to reduce premiums. A drivers license is a rite of passage for most teens. Dont let the high price of insurance get in the way of your teens new found freedom.

How to Get the Cheapest Car Insurance

Auto insurance is mandatory. It does not go on sale; however, there are ways to make sure you are getting the best rate possible. Below are 7 great ways to get the cheapest car insurance.
      Time Required: 30 Minutes

      Here's How:

      1. Shop Different Carriers

Rates can vary widely between major insurance companies. One company may deem you an average risk, and charge you an average rate. While another may find you to be a preferred risk, and give you a much lower rate. A couple ideas to make shopping easier include contacting an independent agent or using an online quoting website. Independent agents have access to multiple carriers and can guide you to the best company without the pain of making lots of phone calls. For the web savvy, various online quoting websites are popping up to help find the cheapest company for you as quickly as possible.

      2. Bundle Policies

Policies grouped together are almost always cheaper than policies insured with different companies. The multi policy discount is a great way to save money on insurance. If you are insuring multiple cars, homes, and toys then insure them all with the same company to maximize your savings.

      3. Verify all Discounts Available

Insurance companies are notorious for odd discounts. Know all the possible discounts and verify which ones you are receiving. A couple of discounts to inquire about are the homeowner discount, paid in full discount, and good student discount. Regardless of how many discounts a company offers, it is the final price that counts.

      4. Keep a Clean Driving Record

Safe drivers get some of the best rates. If you are looking for the cheapest rate possible sometimes it can come directly from your own actions. Set your cruise control, turn your cell phone off, and consciously pay attention to the road.

      5. Good Credit

Good credit is another example of how your actions can influence your insurance rates. Whether you agree or disagree, most insurance companies are basing your rate off of your insurance credit score. Keep your credit score high and your insurance score is sure to follow. A great insurance credit score can leverage surprisingly low insurance premiums.

      6. Avoid Fees

Look for ways to avoid extra fees. Lots of insurance companies charge payment fees. Essentially they are charging you for the processing and paperwork of your bill. Paying your premium in full or having your payments taken automatically out of your bank account could save you some money. Late payment fees can be even higher so be sure to pay on time. Also, find out if combining multiple policies into one billing account can lower fees.

      7. Get the Right Coverage

The coverage you carry on your vehicle is a personal choice. Determine the value of your vehicle and weigh the value against the cost of full coverage. Be smart; if you are not driving one of your vehicles put it in storage. If you do not know all your coverage options, get advice from an experienced agent.
